Det är redan klart att Nissan kommer att visa upp sin Cummins V8 i Nissan Titan. Den gjuts med block i Sintercast CGI.

A Japanese automaker taking on The Big Three wouldn’t be a big story in any market, except trucks. The completely redesigned Cummins-diesel powered 2016 Nissan Titan is posturing to really shake up the American truck market. Here’s everything we know about it so far.

Here’s the official word from Cummins on the 5.0 they developed in conjunction with Nissan for the new Titan:

”This new engine will offer the right balance of power, performance and fuel economy while delivering the dependability that customers expect. With a torque rating in the mid-500s (lb-ft) and more than 300 horsepower, the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel will provide light truck customers the combination of towing capacity and mileage that is expected in the highly-competitive North American truck marketplace.”

Därefter så blev det tyst och inga motorer kom. Vad ändrades i programmet och varför blev de senarelagda?

 

Svaret kan vara att de nu kommer med block i CGI.

 

Sintercast annonserade nyligen före jul att två motorprogram till lastbilar inletts med CGI i blocken men att de fick inte avslöja kundens namn. Av tradition har bara Scania och Volvo varit ytterst hemlighetsfulla om sina materialval till motorerna. De andra såsom MAN, DAF och Navistar har alla fört fram sitt val av CGI som ett stort köpargument.

It is interesting that on the same day Volvo has made this announcement, another Swedish company, SinterCast, has also been able to make an announcement in connection with Dongfeng – see news story below. Volvo is now fully linked to Dongfeng and to compacted graphite iron (CGI) material for diesel engine cylinder blocks and heads.

Much the same goes too for any other technology that DFVC might gain access to through the deal.

In this context, last week’s news cannot be ignored; namely thatDFCV has entered into a technology supply agreement with Swedish process control specialist SinterCast for compacted graphite iron (CGI) product development. Could Volvo’s foundry experience of designing and machining components to accommodate the best of CGI be of benefit to DFCV?

Volvo’s Skövde foundry has had mounting experience of SinterCast’s CGI process control technology since at least 2007. This experience cannot be ignored in this context.

In a bid to expand its business, U.S.-based EcoMotors, Inc. has joined hands with the Chinese First Auto Works Jingye Engine Company (FAW JY) to develop, manufacture, sell and service the opoc engine technology in China. The joint venture, named BEM Shanxi Co. Ltd, is an important step for EcoMotors to capture the Chinese market. For FAW JY, this agreement not only allows the company to bring the new technology to China but also helps develop alternative fuel powertrains on the opoc architecture that use natural gas and methanol.

A business backed by Bill Gates and venture-capitalist Vinod Khosla, this joint venture is expected to put the start-up’s next generation of engines into mass production. The joint venture will initially focus on building diesel engines in China, which are used by trucks. Over four million trucks and vans were sold in China last year, which is a 6.4% jump from the previous year.

The Chinese partner, which is investing more than USD200 million in building the commercial-scale plant in Shanxi Province, will retain a 51% ownership of the joint venture, while EcoMotors will provide intellectual property on a non-exclusive basis retaining 49%. Preparations for the project are expected to begin late this year at the new facility that is estimated to produce 100,000-150,000 engines every year, from 2015.

For EcoMotors, this partnership is a remarkable milestone, which gives credence to the potential of the company’s engine technology, said Amit Soman, EcoMotor’s president and chief operating officer. This will provide customers in China access to affordable technology, which will have a positive effect on the country’s emissions from the transport sector.

FAW Jiefang is also equally excited about the joint venture. Yu Bowei, FAW JY’s executive vice president and FAW Jiefang Engine Company’s assistant general manager said the opoc engine has the potential to contribute to a low-carbon future for China. Located in Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, this joint venture will be an important part of the city’s clean automotive industry and value chain, he said.

EcoMotors Inc., which claims that its engines offer 20% greater fuel economy and are around 30% lighter than traditional engines, hopes it can bring down pollution levels in China. FAW Jingye Vice President Yu Bowei said the EcoMotors engine has the potential to contribute to China’s low-carbon future.

Welcoming the arrival of the opoc engine technology, Chang Zhiren, vice mayor of Jinzhong who is in charge of industrial development, said the opoc architecture comprises 50% fewer components and lesser mass than conventional internal combustion engines. The fully modular capability of the engine offers gains on efficiency and helps achieve nearly half the fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of traditional engines. The reduced mass and weight also gives automakers a chance to rethink vehicle design, to enhance efficiency further, through improved aerodynamics.

Hur mycket blir det då?
Tja, under debuten 1966 sålde Ford över 600.000 Mustang men under detta året ser det ut att sluta runt 80.000. 2.7-l EcoBoots väntas komma i många fler modeller än Mustang. Den är gjord för att passa in i tvärmontage också och då öppnar sig en vid användning.

Our first block has been poured at the foundry – ACTech in Freiberg, Germany.  I was tempted to title this post as, “It LIVES!” We have been working on computer models of this complicated part for so long, to finally see a photograph of a real block made of compacted graphite iron instead of 1′s and 0′s is very very exciting.

Det kommer fler och fler indikationer på att den av GM malpåselagda Duramax 4500 med block i CGI är på väg att återgå och kommer i produktion.

This project hit the rocks amidst The General’s financial woes. The project was cancelled in 2009, and it was reported earlier this year that GM vice president of global powertrain, Steve Kiefer, had made various comments to the effect that GM could “dust off” the 4.5L diesel engine.

This engine is not yet commercially launched although it was touted in the automobile press as one of the most important new engine concepts for small trucks and SUVs by finally delivering a capable diesel engine in a compact enough package. The engine project is current on indefinite hold by GM. General Motors planned a 4.5-litre 72-degree[9] V8 for light-duty applications which would be built at GM’s powertrain facility in Tonawanda, New York after 2009. Designed to fit in the same space as a Chevrolet Small-Block engine, it is expected to produce over 310 bhp (230 kW) and 520 lb·ft (705 N·m) of torque. It added urea injection, 29,000-psi (2,000 bar) piezo-electric common-rail fuel system over previous Duramax architecture.[10]

It was initially targeted for the Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra and Hummer H2.[11] Unlike previous Duramax engines, the 4.5-liter is planned to be designed and built entirely by GM, without assistance from Isuzu.[12]

As of March 2009, a GM spokesperson stated the engine project has been put on an ”indefinite hold” due to current economic conditions

Tonawanda stod helt klart 2009 att börja producera denna motorn med Sintercast CGI i blocket då den ströks och man tryckte inte på knappen till produktion. Sintercast fick stryka 500.000 årliga ekvivalenter ur orderboken. Detta blev början till kursfallet från ca 170 kr till ca 35 kr.

Om den kommer igen så är det givetvis en succé för Sintercast.

Denna motorn kommer till att börja med i Ford  F-150 och Ford Edge Sport men kommer sedan i flera modeller. Mustang är en het kandidat.

Skeptics have predicted the ramp-up could be slow as Ford breaks in its manufacturing process, building about 60 trucks an hour at full line speed. Ford has repeatedly said that the launch is on schedule and that F-150s will arrive in dealerships in December.

Ford shut down its Dearborn manufacturing operation for nearly two months to install 500 robots in the body shop to “conduct state-of-the-art joining technology that leads to a tougher truck,” Ford said in the release.

Ford added 850 workers at its Dearborn operations to support the launch.

After the Dearborn plant gets ramped up, Ford will shut its Kansas City assembly plant in Claycomo, Mo., in the first quarter of 2015 to prepare it for 2015 F-150 production.

Aluminum versions of the F-150 will be as many as 750 pounds lighter than comparable steel-body versions of the current 2014 truck, depending on trim levels, the company has said. Ford is counting on the F-150 to help it meet more stringent fuel economy regulations.

Ford CEO Mark Fields has said Ford is committed to more aluminum vehicles. On Sept. 29, he said the next-generation Super Duty pickup also will be aluminum.

Vid full speed på bandet kommer det alltså 60 trucks per timme. Det dröjer ett tag innan detta. Det är dock inte den enda fabriken som skall tillverka denna F-150. Kansas City har en som skall stänga för uppgradering när denna i Dearborn har varvat upp.

Den motorn som har Sintercast CGI i blocket väntas bli mycket populär men än vet vi inte hur stor del av produktionen den kommer att ta.

 

”Vibrationsfritt” med CGI

Då går det t om  att flyga med en standard aluminiumpropeller. Detta är bara början mina vänner. Det skadar dock inte att reflektera över de små volymerna det är tal om inom flygmotortillverkning. Detta kommer aldrig att bli annat är en förbannat god referens.

Important to the design of the ‘Vision 350’ diesel engine is its unique ability to accept aluminum propellers. Powering a Hartzell aluminum ‘scimitar’ prop of 78-inch diameter, the EPS diesel produced very low vibration throughout its full RPM range. No other diesel aero engine can turn an aluminum prop without the possibility of random catastrophic failure due to blade fatigue.

Chrysler Group LLC announced plans Tuesday to double production of its Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. The automaker said it will increase production of the diesel pickup from 10 percent to 20 percent of its light-duty pickup mix.

Bob Hegbloom, Ram Truck president and CEO, said there’s high demand for the diesel because of its fuel economy and exclusivity. “Innovation sometimes comes with risk, but being first to market with a diesel engine for the half-ton segment has shown to be a great decision for the Ram brand,” he said.

Curt Towne, plant manager at Warren Truck assembly plant, said last week that the plant was “ramping up” to almost 230 diesel vehicles a day, up from 100 per day that the plant was originally building. He said, the plant “can’t build enough of them right now.”

Notera att denna motorn finns i flera modeller än RAM 1500.
